That’s right! Both the invention of the container and ISO global standardization resulted in the important innovation in the logistics industry world- wide.

This is a scene at a dock in the early 1950’s. We can see dock-workers unloading bags of coffee, boxes of bananas and other cargo from the ship. Before containers came into the scene, a lot of “manpower, time and money” was required.
It was in 1956, when the U.S. trucking entrepreneur, Malcolm Mclean, invented the container, which was a revolutionary idea in those days. The invention of the container brought mechanization to cargo handling operations originally performed manually by dock-workers, and it resulted in bringing the world economies together.
“Containerization”prevailed in the 1970’s throughout the world. Global standardization of container specifications by ISO made unified logistics possible using both the ship and truck. These modes of transportation had been completely separate in the 1950’s. Standardization resulted in vast improvements in cargo handling efficiency, lowering costs and helping lower freight charges, and, in turn, boosting trade flows the world over.
